New Clutch-need help!
im looking for a performance clutch thats pretty durable. im still kinda confused on the materials of clutches (organic/carbon). and whether i should get a stage 1 or 2. and are there any particular name brands that stand out? also, ive been asking around at local shops and the lowest quote ive recieved for a full install was $280. is that cheap, average, high?

If your looking for a good well-priced clutch, go Exedy. If your looking to spend some extra dough, go ACT. I would say stage 2. I'm very happy with my ACT setup. It bites like a newborn on its mama's nipple. Also I would look into a new flywheel while you've got the engine open.
And 280 is reasonable. I don't know about 4th gens but my tranny was a pain in the ass to get out. But I'm happy I did it myself.

I went with a gold series LuK clutch for my 97 SH. they make the stock clutches for almost all car brands, but this is a heavy duty one that will last a lot longer. after doing my research, it turns out that "stage 2" is just a title that one of the brands (exedy i think) uses. also, LuK is the only brand where the clutch is original, and not refurbished. it has been working out for me really well, grabs well, and doesnt make the car shudder at all the way other perf. clutches do. unfortunately, if you have an SH, you gotta pay a lot for the labor, cuz they have so many bizarre parts that need to be moved out of the way to get at the clutch. the part was $300, but the bill was a little over $1000. good luck

Re: New Clutch-need help!
I have been running the Exedy organic racing clutch for almost a year now. Stages really have no meaning, and there should be little difference between the functionality of organic and cerametallic clutches. It all feels the same..

Re: New Clutch-need help!
I always thought that "stages" referred to the amount of load a clutch can handle? For example: a stage 3 clutch might have a higher clamp load rating than a stage 1, or a stage 3 clutch might be triple plate as opposed to a single plate or double plate stage 2. Isn't there a standard to follow, like if your pushing over 300 hp you need a stage 2 or something like that?
****edit**** OK. Now I see...different companies use different terminology to designate the clutch performance rating. Got it now. |
