Blazer Randomly Turns Off

I've got a problem when taking off from a stop. The past few weeks my '94 S-10 Blazer LT (4.3 Vortec) has occasionally "turned off" and then immediatly restarted when giving it gas from a stop. I say turned off because it's like someone has turned the key for a second. All power is lost, radio turns off, etc. and the engine stops running. As soon as I realize what has just happened everything is running again. A few days ago the problem occured again, except the lapse lasted longer-and I was turning in front of oncoming traffic. Most of the time it happens right after I drive over a bumpy patch of road but not in every instance, and it only happens in the first second or two after accelerating from a stop. Any advice is appreciated.

Search this forum for threads related to the ignition switch, and it's replacement.

The '94 is still the first-gen blazer style. The ignition switch problem relates to the newer style. However, in the older style, there were problems with the lockset and the rack in the steering column. What wolfox said is correct, there are threads on this but be sure that it is the first-gen blazer you are looking at.

Thanks...I've got a friend who suspects the coil-says it shows signs of arcing. I'll investigate the lockset this weekend. I don't know much about this subject, so thanks for the help.

Re: Blazer Randomly Turns Off

The coil may be bad but that doesn't explain why all power is lost to the dash to include the radio.

Yea, that is what I thought to.

Coil will not affect the dash.

Sounds like a problem in the steering column.

Re: Blazer Randomly Turns Off

Abad coil will NOT kill power to the dash. Start looking for loose wires on the battery , starter, and under the dash on the lower ign switch for any loose or melted wires.
The ign key lock rack breaks when its bad and will not let you turn the key so I would say that is not your problem.
