blower motor finally went

I have a 96 Trans Port and last winter the blower motor quit working but if I tapped the side of the casing with a screwdriver handle it would start to blow. It is finally getting cold here (southern Indiana) and the screwdriver handle trick isn't working anymore. I worked fine in warmer weather but not now. It looks like a bear to get to it.

I was wondering if there are any relays or anything to check before replacing the motor, checked fuses already. Trying to keep from investing in a motor, rather spend money on presents for kids.

Re: blower motor finally went

Check the local wrecking yard or carpart.com. You should be able to find a fan for about $25 if it truly is the motor. GM cars have a problem with the blower motor resistor located next to the blower. If it went then the resistor will need to be replaced. You can do the job yourself with a minimum of tools. The resistor is $40 at a dealer. Once you remove the fan then check it with a 12 volt source. If it runs save the $25 for the fan motor and just get the resistor.

I got it out (not an easy fit) but I think I have a solution. My wife hit two deer last winter and I replaced the hood, r/fender, both headlights and the electric cooling fan (saved about $1000 on the insurance). I still have the fan ( had a a feeling I might need it someday) and lo and behold it is the same motor I just have to somehow get it to fit in the housing. Wish me luck.

Re: blower motor finally went

I was able to get to it from under the hood, wasn't easy to get it out of there. The motor was basicly the same but the housings were different. I think it was the bearing that was worn out allowing the armature to contact the field. I just replaced the bearing from the other motor and now going out to see if it works now.
