Turbo whining when cold

So this problem has been going on for a few weeks, but I never really paid attention to it until i really learned more about turbos and now I'm afraid that somethings wrong. Every morning when i start up my car I let it idle for a few mins to warm up of course. When I start driving, if boost ever kicks in, its very jerky at first, and makes a whining noise along with the wastegate sound for the first 1 min of driving or so, then goes away when the engine is at normal temp. It functions great when its at normal engine temp, but in the mornings it worries me a bit, and I think the bearings might be goin (?). When i start it up after i have let it sit for about 6 hours or so during the daytime, the turbo will whine a little bit for like 30 seconds and then go away and function normally when driving. MAF honeycombs arrive in a few days cause my friend was a douche and crushed my lower one and dented the side ones thinkin i didnt need em (i was just experimenting >< stupid). Anyhow, could it be the maf, is the turbo goin, or is it something else like boost leak (which i doubt, but dont know for sure)? Help or suggestions asap. Oh yea, and I DID check for shaftplay like 20 mins ago, and it has no play whatsoever. Nothing at all, looks like in good condition to me. 54K miles on the car. diagnosis anyone?

Re: Turbo whining when cold

Sorry, not sure what it could be. Since it goes away with the engine temperature, it's probably not a boost leak or 'always wrong' problem. I would suggest not boosting until the car is fully warm anyway, though. I don't even like to drive the car without warming it up.

Re: Turbo whining when cold

check your oil level you may be having a oil supply problem until the oil warms up and expands.

Re: Turbo whining when cold

are you 100% it is the turbo? you are comming up on the 60k timing belt mark, so it could be a belt problem, which sounds more like the 'only cold' diagnosis. and jerky cold starts are somewhat normal [for me at least]. also with the honeycombs out you are getting a LOT more unmetered air in there and with it as cold as it is getting here in cali the air density is a lot more too. so untill the turbo it self is warming up air it just may be a slight lean condition combined with a choke [cold start <200 degrees?] condition...

Re: Turbo whining when cold

im leaning more towards BoostedSyder's diagnosis, cause when it was really warm or during the daytime, there werent any rough startups or as much turbo whining and such. Prolly just cold dense air, even tho im not totally convinced, . Wont have the T-25 forever anyways, so problems will slowly be sorted out im sure. 15-50 could be too thick too, so im gonna go with 10w-30 from now on. Thanks guys, maybe I was just worrying a little too much. btw, what kind of oil do you reccomend?
