96 Taurus Wont Turn Over
I have a 96 Taurus with 107k miles on it.
It has a: -New battery -New starter It needs: -An oil change, however I just added oil in it the other day just to make sure there was enough to keep me going I tried starting the car today, after it rained heavily, and the starter switches over just fine, but the engine keeps trying to start; whir whir whir whir whir but no start. I turned my ignition to the ON position and noticed the Service Light was now on, along with my Battery and Oil lights. Is this normal to have these lights turn on when the car won't start? What do you think the problem could be? Too much water on some part? Fuel? I just got gas the other day... Help please, I really need this to work tomorrow morning!! |

UPDATE:
Car suddenly works fine now, after refilling it with Oil and Brake fluid. However, my service light is now on permanently... Is this normal? |

If the check engine light is on, there is something wrong. You can take it to autozone and have the code read and see what is wrong. If you dont feel like it is something you can untertake, then i would take it to a dealer or recommended mechanic. Let us know what the code is, and we'll see what we can do.

Re: 96 Taurus Wont Turn Over
Yeah, I had my car checked about 6 months ago when my service light came on and it said it was the Oxygen Sensor for my Catalyst converter. It wasnt necessary to replace, it had a default value, so I didnt. The light eventaully went off. Now its back on, do you think it could be the same thing? ]
Also my car starts up fine now, but a few times it sounds like it may stall when starting but it doesnt. Can a leaking oil pan cause this....? |

Re: 96 Taurus Wont Turn Over
Leaking oil pan will not cause the car to stall. That is another problem. The first thing i would do is a complete tune up. here is what i would replace:
SPark plugs, and wires, air filter, fuel filter, PCV valve and check all fluid levels. Also, a bad oxygen sensor will not get anybetter, only worse. It should be replaced. A bad O2 sensor will cause the engine to run with the wrong fuel to air mixture. This can cause your Catalytic converter to fail early, and cause wear on the spark plugs and also you will be getting a little less fuel mileage. Again have the code read, and see what it comes up as. |

Re: 96 Taurus Wont Turn Over
Well I had my spark plugs replaced a little less than a year ago, my fuel and air filters look fine, so do my wires. I think it must be the O2 sensor, and I'll try and get that replaced soon.
