popping noise
I have a 89 Jeep Cherokee 2WD with the I-6. Lately if I try to quickly accelerate, the engine sputters and pops, very rythmic (like a machine gun) with a big dropoff in power, but if I accelerate slowly, it is fine. My guess is the fuel pump, maybe?

Make sure your spark plugs are good shape. Then check fuel pump...

before I spent the time and money on a pump replace the fuel filter!! you can also run a presure check on the fuel system at the fuel rail [least ways you can on a 90 - 4.0 |

Re: popping noise
If it had a carb I would say that's a classic sign of an accelerator pump problem within the carb. The popping noise could be a spark retardation too so another thing would be to check the timing.

Re: popping noise
I replaced the fuel filter and that did nothing to change the problem. A little further investigation revealed a bad fuel injector on the #2 cylinder. replaced that and fixed the problem.
