starter installation

The starter died on my tib because I drove through a flooded street and then my car was sitting for about 8 days (I was out-to-sea because I am in the Navy so don't yell at me for letting it sit that long.) Anyway, I took the starter off and opened it up and chunks of rust and metal fell out. If you didn't know the starter on the 4 cyl is underneath the air intake at the top corner of the flywheel. Let me tell you something, the HMA service makes it sound easy to remove/install but those instructions are over-simplified. The instructions tell you to remove the air cleaner assembly and the speedo cable, then remove starter. My ass, I had to disconnect my shift linkage as well to get to the bolts. The instructions also tell you to remove the negative battery cable from the battery. If you don't want to get a nice shock I would suggest removing the positive lead too. Yes it is true that with the negative cable removed there should be no ground on the engine. However, when I was wrenching the nut ,that holds the power cable to the starter, off, the wrench touched the starter case and shocked me. Now, let's get to how hard it is to get that nut off and then back on when you install the new one (it is much harder to get back on). The engine brace and exhaust are in the way, and I could barely get around them. If you have access to a lift it would be easy because you could take the brace off and disconnect the exhaust flange.

Well now my new starter is giving me a funny problem. Once in a while it won't start, you don't hear a click or anything. Then if you rock the car back and forth in neutral it will start. I am thinking that the power cable to the starter is not tight enough. So, I am going to have to go to the auto hobby shop on the base and put it up on a lift to get that nut on tight. If that doesn't fix it, then I will try re-installing the starter. Hopefully, it is just a loose nut and nothing more complicated.

I don't know anything about changing out starters, but I do have to agree with you when you say the HMA directions are over simplified. Just thought I'd add my worth

sure sounds easy, but hyundai put a spider web of clutch, brake, and fuel lines all around the bitch. and those lines are rigid lines. then to top that off, they make it so that only prince arthur can undo the bottom connection between the fuel line and filter.

Since you have to rock it back & forth, sounds to me like it's the solenoid.
