'93 wrangler 5 speed question

My jeep has trouble getting into 2nd gear, grinds at any rpm greater than 1000. I also cant downshift into second or first unless I'm almost stopped. Are these 5 speed trannys supposed to be fully synchronized? Does anybody know where the best deals are on rebuilt trannys?

I too am having the exact same problem with my 1995 wrangler. I havent been able to figure out if its the synchros or something else. Perhaps maybe the shift linkage is incorrect? Any help would be appreciated.

Double clutching may help out with the problem in the short run.

In general, any reputable and competent transmission shop should be able to rebuild your transmission for you. Ask and call around to find out reputations and prices.

Thanks for the advice. I was really trying to find out if the 5 speeds were just cranky or this is a real problem. On the other hand I've had poor luck lately with local shops on transmission work and was considering buying one out of the box from a "proven" rebuilder that someone might recommend. If anybody has any info on this approach I'd welcome it. Thanks again.

On my '97 I had a little grinding going into 2nd if I was in a hurry. I think that 2nd takes abuse off road also, so it'll tend to wear, especially if someone beat on the Jeep before you got it.

I also have a 95 wrangler with a 5 speed but dont usually have trouble shifting unless its not the right RPM range for the gear. But I'm told the synchros can be verry finicky in them they are brass and can stick if they dont like the oil you give them. I try an oil change. I was recomended ROYAL PURPLE its a synthetic and is GL5 / 80/90 w rated as per my manual I found it locally at an ATV shop.Also your linkage could be bent worn or just not right. But thats inside the tranny. Also if the tranny is low on fluid the synchros may not slide properly cause they are high and dry. The more expensive problem could be that the synchros might be damaged wich would mean a lot more money.
