96 1500 dying/wont start for 3 hours
I have a 96 1500 w/t and all of the sudden when driving along it will die out and wont start unless you let it sit for 3-4 hours. Then it may run again for 4-5 days before it happens again. Anyone have any idea what would be causing this? Thanks for any input.

Check the coil and the pick up coil inside the distributor the next time it wont start. If they check ok check the module. The pick up coil is known to act when it goes bad it will shut down when it gets hot and when it cools down it will work for a while untill the next time.

Someone also told me this could be the computer. Would this have anything to do with it?

Re: 96 1500 dying/wont start for 3 hours
There could be about 1,000 things that could cause this problem.
1. Fuel pressure problem 2. Ign system problem 3. Computer problem. 4 Wiring problem. These are just a few places to start to look. When its got a no start do you have spark?? what is the fuel pressure reading?? Any check engine lights on??? Its impossible to guess what your problem is with out more info |

Re: 96 1500 dying/wont start for 3 hours
It seems to be when it is damp out that it wont start. I had it running last night, with some hesitation when giving it gas, now this morning it just wont start again. It cranks over fine. I can hear the fuel pump working, after several attemps at starting, it smells gassy in the engine compartment, backfired once last night before it finally started. Just seems like the wetter it is outm the less it wants to try to start. Its not even attempting to start, just cranks.

Re: 96 1500 dying/wont start for 3 hours
I think i now EXACTALLY what your problem is. I can almost bet on it that it is your disributer cap that has a crack in it that you quite possibly can not even see. Pick up a cap/rotor and change them and i bet that this will not happen again. My dad has a 93 and his would do the same thing. It would run fine, and then one day it just would not start. We changed the cap/rotor on the advice of a mechanic and it fired right up. About 6 months later it did the same thing, change the cap/rotor again and it has been fine since, and has been fine now for about 5-7 years now. When this would happen to my dads truck , it was always raining. I hope this helps you out.

Re: Re: 96 1500 dying/wont start for 3 hours
![]() It is something in the secondary igniton ignition system, and most likely is the coil/distributor. If that doesn't solve it, check the primary wires going to the coil. |

Re: 96 1500 dying/wont start for 3 hours
Changed the cap and rotor today, noticed that one bolt was stripped out on the cap. Inside the cap was all corroded. Not even a mark from the rotor spinning. So I tapped the hole a size bigger, put some dielectric grease around the cap, and it sealed down great. Truck fired right up and seems to be running great once again. Thanks for the help to all.
247,000 miles and still going!!!!! |
