outside door handle stopped working (metro hatch)

1992 2-door metro hatchback 3-cylinder

I can't open the driver side door from the outside.
I guess something came loose inside the door.
The window won't go all the way down now either.
The handle however works fine from the inside.

Does anyone know how to get the door panel off or
any other way of fixing this particular problem?

It never ends.

Need help

Re: outside door handle stopped working (metro hatch)

Work a rag around the handle in a sawing motion to get the window crank clip off. Remove the screws at the handle and arm rest , carefully pry the panel off. Then look for the broken hook on the outside handle and replace it or make a new one. Use white grease on all the moving parts of the door and window track. good luck

Re: outside door handle stopped working (metro hatch)

The outside handle broke (as you already know) and the rod for the latch is laying in the path of the window. That is why the window wont go all the way down. Do not force it or your rod will be bent and it is fun to straighten. I have had to replace all my handles on my 93. I have some spare outside handles I pulled from a 93 parts car if you need one. The guy I got the car from made aluminum brackets to fix the weak point on the handle. Email me if you need one @ dstuart115@excite.com

I think I'm going to bring it to a Chevy dealer.
It sounds like it's a real pain to get the door panel off without breaking anything else. I've already invested to much into this car to be breaking things needlessly and then replacing them too. If it was an easy fix, I'd go for it.
