Why the STi and not the Evo?

Hi, I currently own an 03 Subaru TS Wagolas and am planning on selling it and buying a new car. My two picks are obviously the STi and the Evo.

So I was just wondering if you guys who test drove both cars could tell me why you ended up getting the STi over the Evo.

Thanks for the help

Re: Why the STi and not the Evo?

This is a subject that has been flogged to death here already, I suggest a forum search if you truly want to find the opinions of others.

Since you're in the market for either though, why don't you go to the dealerships and test drive both and decide which YOU prefer, since it will be your car.

My opinion....I am a rally fan, look at the results of Mitsu versus Subaru, how many mechanical failures have Mitsu had?
What wins on Sunday sells on Monday, right?
Well, I haven't seen Mitsu win anything in a while

Yea, it is always the STi vs EVO. The arguement will never ever be ressolved. It depends what you want, test drive both and see which one you prefer. And plus, mitsu warrenty sucks.

Re: Why the STi and not the Evo?

I am living in a small town right now and so I can't test drive them. I'm actually from Canada and found out that you can not get an Evo in Canada anyways.

I was leaning towards the STi, from what I have read it seems more realiable. I have already heard some bad stories about the Evo, especially from people who track theirs.

I'll have to test drive it first but I think I would like the STi better anyways.

Re: Why the STi and not the Evo?

As everyone said, it's just a matter of preference. Performancewise, they are "virtually" equal--let's not get into that topic any further...

So, it tends to come down to brand image, looks, and such. I personally think that Lancers look like cheapo economy cars. Mitsubishi had the worst financial record of all car manufacturers in Japan last year, and had a major scandal on hiding recalls. They were unable to complete the WRC season. The list goes on as to why Mitsubishi sucks...and why I would NEVER consider buying one of their cars.

Re: Why the STi and not the Evo?

And, despite their commercials' claims to the contrary, Mitsubishi factory support sucks a lot. Subaru also has a MASSIVE aftermarket, Mitsu not so much. The Evo is faster on paper, but from the driver's seat unless you're an expert track driver you'll never know the difference. Go with the STi.

I totally agree with your post on the evo and factory service versus the commercial hype. As far as quality of build the STI is in a different league and Subaru has the 4 wheel drive thing down over Mitsu. The evo seems a little easier to mod due to engine layout, but I understand that many local dealers here in FL. are not mod friendly and in fact there has been lots of noise out there about warranties being denied over things as small as non oem airfilters, exhausts etc.... Mitsu right as a company on paper, is technically bankrupt. this probably explains why they are so apt to poor post sales support. The STI is a better real world car.

Both aftermarket support for both Mitsubishi and Subaru are almost matched. The reason of why Mitsubishi would had a weaker aftermarket support is simply the fact of it's USDM variant EVO.

Subaru has had a higher performing vehicle line in U.S. since the 90s with the Impreza, therefore its aftermarket support was built up until now with the release of the Impreza WRX STi.

Mitsubishi on the other hand, release the EVO just recently a year or two back. There is plenty of aftermarket support overseas, probably more than Subaru from what I've seen traveling to various countries in Asia. But it's the matter of time when those aftermarket industries make a mark in the U.S.

Re: Why the STi and not the Evo?

Check out Sport Compact car magazine because they just did a huge artical on what is overall better. They have all the stats, but anyone could tell that the bias is towards the EVO. I heard that the MR was pretty cool, but I havent looked at it that carefully yet.

Re: Why the STi and not the Evo?

I agree, mistu is going WAY downhill. Here in Aust, they're offering 10-15 yr warranties, and when I went to get my WRX, the dealer told us that the next door mitsu dealer had gone through 2 owners in the last 6 months and that the industry buzz is that mitsu is gonna be finished in Australia in 6 months. :O keep in mind australia is a country that quite likes their mitsubishis

Re: Why the STi and not the Evo?

Actually, word on the rumor mill is that Mitsu will be in an upswing soon. Mitsu recently hired the guy who designed all the new Nissans, and the Nissan lineup in recent years has been all but bulletproof. If he does as well with the Mitsubishi cars as he did with the Nissans (granted a different company and different philosophies of auto-building and business, so who knows), Mitsu should have a strong lineup soon. They are, however, contemplating the demise of the Lancer, so the Evo would also be out. If it goes away, though, it will undoubtedly be replaced with something. ***Disclaimer***: Almost all of the preceding was hearsay and is not to be taken as fact. I have a cadre of 3000gt driving friends whose news and opinion is always Mitsubishi-biased.

Yikes! 3000GT's. I really don't understand why people are drawn to 3000GT's...

Re: Why the STi and not the Evo?

The 3000gt, even in the FWD non-turbo versions, is quite a capable sportscar. It's big and heavy, so it rides quite nicely. The cockpit is like flying a fighter jet, the way the gauges are set up. Track times for the FWD version are not so hot, but it's definitely fun to drive. And with the right mix and match of year-model and domestic-market parts it's a sexy looking car, too. The VR-4, on the other hand, is badass straight out of the box, from every angle: technology, performance, and aesthetics all in one package.

Well...I guess so. By the way, talking about STI and EVO, the new issue of car and driver (or is it road and track?? I forget) has a rematch between evo and STI. Evo edged the STI by a nose again.
