video installation/question

Ok, so I know this is not really about Silverado's, but its a question I need answered, and everybody in here usually seems pretty much on the up and ups about this kind of stuff.

Anybody who has mobile video (in-dash or headrest or overhead, whatever), is there a way to bypass the lock that will not allow video to be played while the vehicle is not in park with the emergency brake on? Is this even a feature on all units?

I am thinking about buying one and I would like for passengers to be able to watch movies while I am on the road.

How difficult is it to install in a silverado? I am pretty proficient at installing stereo equipment, I already have a bunch of tools and stuff that I think I will need. Should I give it a try or send it somewhere to get done? Is there a chance I can screw things up really bad?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Re: video installation/question

I'm pretty sure you should be able to play the video any time you want. I may be way off base here and you may want to try www.the12volt.com as they have some pretty smart stereo guys over there.
I've never heard of that. I would think that the head unit couldn't give whether the car was in Park or screaming down the road. Otherwise, what would be the point in purchasing one of these units...

Just my !

I installed a flip down tv and an indash dvd player in my truck. My unit had the lock you are talking about. All I did was ground that wire. The lock just makes it ground, thus giving the image, so in order to bypass it, just ground the wire that goes to the lock. Hope this helps you out.

I, too, installed an overhead lcd screen with dvd player installed in center console in a 99 silverado x-cab. I had no issues with a safety lock of any type. I use an dc-ac inverter to run a cyberhome (cheapie wal-mart type made for home systems) dvd player, an fm modulator (running rca style audio cables from dvd player), and overhead lcd screen with power running to it (from overhead console) and rca video cable from the dvd player. I know its pretty ghetto-rigged, but I spent less than $80 for it all, plus it looks entirely stock if the screen isnt down (mounted it in the overhead console cd case holder).

Re: video installation/question

I had often wondered this same thing.... kinda crappy to spend $1500 on a dvd/cd reciever and only get to play it while your parked.

I got

I knocked out my rear window.

Put in a 61" plasma screen.

It runs off 4 - 1500 watt dc/ac boxes.

Yes, I play porn so everybody behind can watch

Ok on a serious note.

The E-brank wire is for safty right, Wrong it is also against the law.

So if you get pulled over make sure your DVD is not playing Behind the Green Door or anything else.

Re: video installation/question

Yeah, it is a law issue. But around where I live I can get away with it. Hell, the cops probably would sit and watch some of whatever I was looking at for awhile. I love small towns lol.

Re: video installation/question

I said to heck with it and just pull out my laptop and sit it on the Console. 15" Screen and fire up the DVD player and I'm off to the races. My son loves it. Great on long trips. The only thing to do now is figure out how to wire the sound to the truck stereo system. Of course an aftermarket Head unit would provide the right inputs....

I do the same thing.

Also you might want to take a look at Garmin GPS 18 system for laptops.

You plug into your laptop and now you have 15" screen GPS

They sell them on ebay for about $119.00 or you can get them from Garmin - $159.00 . A lot cheaper than those people that spend $2,000.00

Here is the one I bought...

Garmin

When I go 4x4ing, I hook it up for my jeep and I never get lost. Last trip I went over 210 miles on the trails. Thank god I have a 20 gallon + 10 gas cans with me. If I did not have my GPS I would have been in real trouble.
