Re: whirring noise

How many miles?

I'd try turning the engine off on an incline, and coasting downhill to hear better where the noise is coming from. It could be as simple as some brush wound around the axle, or as bad as bearings. Try to isolate the sound. With more info might be more help.

whirring noise

Does the drive shaft from the transfer case to the front axle stay engaged to the front axle all the time?Sounds like the noise is in that area.

Re: whirring noise

The front drive shaft, or the axle itself? I think on that year the front hubs have a vacuum disconnect so that they freewheel when 2wd isn't engaged. Might be time to jack up the whole thing and spin tires slowly to see what's making the noise.
