Timing Gear won't come off
I just replaced the front crankshaft seal a couple weeks ago, but I either damaged it when I put it in, or the crankshaft was slightly worn because it is really leaking oil now. I'm going to sleeve the crankshaft, and put in a new seal just to be sure, but I'm running into trouble trying to tear it down again.
Last time the timing gear slid right off the crankshaft after taking off the main nut using the starter method, but no such luck this time. The nut's off, but the timing gear is still really stuck on there. Any ideas about how to get it off without damaging it? Wish it would have went as easy as it did the first time around... |

Try heating it with a propane torch, and tapping it with a wooden or rubber hammer. It's probably cockeyed on there, or the woodruff key is wedged.

Re: Timing Gear won't come off
I tried heating it up, and tapping it but no luck. I tried heating it briefly, and also tried for about 2 minutes with direct heat, is that long enough? Is there anything else worth trying. If I put the crankshaft nut back on and re-torque it do you think it might help get the timing gear back on "straight" or free up the woodruff key?

Re: Timing Gear won't come off
Rent or buy a gear puller.
I used a steering wheel puller to get mine off. |
