Question Braking Problem

Hey guys, I noticed over the last couple days my brakes arnt working as good as they were. I've checked the pads and rotors and they are fine, I checked the fluid and it was about 3/4 of the way full so I topped it off. I even went as far as to replace the vacuum line from the carb thinking it might be leaking abit. What happens is when I first hit the brakes it seems fine but as I'm slowing down the pedal goes to the floor so I pump them and while Im doing that I get this weird sound comming out from somewhere by the brake pedal, it kinda sounds like a loud squish. Has anyone had this prob before or have any ideas of what the problem could be? I would like to get this fixed before I sell her. Thanks

Re: Braking Problem

well your loosing vaccum some where, i had this problem on a 91 camaro, the problem was bad pumps on the rear wheel cyclinders. (or drums)cant remember what he called it. but my dad had fixed it by replacing the 2 pumps. but that fixed mine and i had also replaced the front 2 rubber brake hoses from the metal line out to the calipers

Re: Braking Problem

Sounds like it's spitting brake fluid out , do you have any wetness in your wheel wells ? or around your rotors ? When I went and had mine safety inspected , it was just a matter of adjusting them. I believe the disc brakes use floating calipers and they tend to stick. My drum shoes had to be adjusted slightly too. Go to Midas , they do adjustments for 20 bucks on the Maro's front and rear. Takes them about 25 - 30 minutes tops. After mine were adjust it felt like my braking was hitting a rock wall. Instant stops..Took me a while to get used to.

Re: Braking Problem

obviously youre loosing pressure, either vacume, or fluid, i think fluid is the key thing to look for here. check all your lines, and the brakes themselves for evidence of leaking. find the wet gooey spot, and you find your leak.

As far as i can tell its not fluid leaking because its still full and I replaced the line from the back of the carb to the booster. I hear the noise come from down around the brake pedal area, is there anything down there that can go bad?

Re: Braking Problem

thats what i think it is; not the booster but the master cyclinder. same thing happened to my buddy's car, we replaced the cylinder and the booster at the same time (i just realized i typed brake booster instead of master cylinder)

To answer why I'm selling her, I kinda have to. The wife says I have to many projects going and a couple of them have to go that is if I wish to continue on with my projects. Anyway yes its a whoosh sound that I'm hearing and the pedal will slowly fall to the floor unless I pump the brakes. I have the 88 sitting there and I know the brakes worked fine when I drove it home. do you think they are the same or do you think I should just replace the whole unit booster and master cylinder at the same time?

no just the master cylinder, first of all, booster hardly ever go bad. second you would have to mess w/ the pedal assembly if you took out the booster. besides judging by your description, the master cylinder is the only thing that has gone bad.

sux that you have to sell the car... are u selling the newly painted one, or a different one?

Re: Braking Problem

i too have this exact same problem except mine started when i switched to four wheel discs...i changed the porportioning valve but still no help really. i think the problem is the master cylinder since they r different for the ones with all discs. i just need to know if the bigger bore size will fit my power booster since i obviosly know nothing about brakes???
