Re: 86 escort timing

Take off the timing cover, and get a mirror. Look for a "pointer" in one of the holes on the cam sprocket. Make it perfectly straight up and down (there's a dot where it would be up and down) with the engine. Then, get this, put the timing cover back on, but without the belt attached, and line up the crank to the highest, largest line on the belt cover. Then, take the cover off, and put on the belt, keep the crank from moving especially, tighten the belt to 27 lbs., I think, and let the belt tensioner fly. Turn the engine by hand a few revolutions and see if the marks are lined up properly. If it all checks out...tighten the cover back down, start the car, and run it for a little bit, about a mintue, and then check again. If it's still on, grab a cold one and pat your back.

Re: 86 escort timing

Cam timing is incorrect, causing valves to hit pistons. (You may have valve and or piston damage)
TIP: Before you put the timing belt on, see that the crankshaft keyway is at 12:oclock, Camshaft sprocket keyway is at 6: oclock, and the camshaft pointer is aligned with the timing mark as explained above. Put the belt on in a counterclockwise direction starting at the crankshaft sprocket keeping the belt as tight as possible. (I secure the belt to the camshaft sprocket with zip-ties) Lock the crankshaft in position and then Torque the belt in the counterclockwise direction using the large camshaft nut. While holding this tension (27 - 32 ft lbs) release the tension bar against the belt and tighten.
