Angry Catalytic Converter?

Where can I get a catalytic converter for my 2000 impala. I went to dealership and they told me 622.00 for a new one!!!!!!! Thats just fricking crazy!!! I found one on the internet for 51.00. The dealership told me that if i put an aftermarket one on it, it will throw all kinds of service engine soons lights. Has any replaced their converter with an aftermarket one? I also have to have the rack and pinion steering thing replaced, both lower control arms on the front tires. The rear driverside strut needs replaced because of a pot hole the size of a manhole cover on the expressway blew it out, go figure. This car is a NIGHTMARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will NEVER buy another GM car again!!!!!!!

OH, let me know on the converter....

If the car has less than 80,000 miles on it call the GM customer service line, they recently replaced mine on my 2002, because the warranty on the catalytic converter is 80,000. If you have more than 80,000 I would still call and complain they should be made aware of it and as a good will effort they may cover it. While you are at it also inform them of the problems with the rack and pinion steering, I was recently told there was a problem with another model and they are currently replacing those. They most likely will tell you that it has to be verified by a dealer and then they will let you know, but they should cover it.

Well I found out that they won't pay for it because my car is a few miles out of warranty, what a bunch of shit. I took it in a few times wiht the complaint, they said nothing was wrong with it, but all of a sudden with it being over 80k the converter is plugged and they recommend it because replaced as soon as possible. I called them told them they need to replace it or i'm going to start legal action. I have put about 8500.00 bucks into it since i have had it, and i have had it only one year. They are going to call later today and tell me what they are going to do. My cousin is a lawyer and he said to let him know and he will be on his way here to start a lawsuit. I will keep you guys informed.

Re: Catalytic Converter?

My converter clogged up at about 70K and I had to replaced it out of pocket. Is this a fairly common thing?

Re: Catalytic Converter?

Mike,
I paid about $240.00 but I had a Goodyear auto serv. center do the work. He was considerably cheaper than GM. You can get an OEM conveter from O'Reilly's for about $225 if you want to do the wor yourself (Mine is an '02 3.8 so yours should be roughly the same) Let me know how you come out.

Re: Catalytic Converter?

Do you have a phone number for this place, is it a shop in your area, an internet store??? Will they ship me a converter. Also, how long ago did you have yours replaced, did you notice a difference in performance, and led you to having it replaced...

Re: Catalytic Converter?

Mike,
I had mine replaced about 2 months ago. The shop was just a Goodyear Auto Serv. Center just part of their chain (Also known as Goodyear/Gemini Service centers) I'm not sure where your from but I'm from N Tex/S Okla. Do they have them where you are? About getting it from O'reilly's, they're just a chain (like auto zone or carquest or Napa etc.) and I'm sure you can order parts online through them. Check out Oreillyauto.com
I did notice a serious drop in engine performance (the engine would lug really hard at any speed and not rev up very fast or rev over 4000). I took it in with no clue what was wrong and this was the problem. I hope this helps you. Let me know

Hardy

Re: Catalytic Converter?

See what mine is doing, if i'm on the expressway doing about 70, i can't get the car to increase speed at all unless i put it in passing gear, sometimes i have to stomp it to the floor, when it goes into passing gear, it's just flies. Same thing going up any kind of an incline over 60, i have to put it in passing gear to get it to increase speed, i figured it might be the catalytic converter, the dealership said same thing too....but i don't know...I was also told it took a specific converter, if i put the wrong one on it, the service engine light would come on....i dont' know....people can't give straight up answers anymore.....it's all about money.

If you have any ideas what i could check, let me know, i will try, but if it's ungodly expensive, like more of the problems i have had, i'm not going to fix it.....

thanks,
mike

Re: Catalytic Converter?

Mike,
They may be right about the check engine light, because mine still comes on. (It keeps saying that the system is below efficiency threshhold, but the system is fine(I've since had it checked)). This really could be the problem causing your lack of performance. If that's not the problem also check the fuel filter, it can cause similar problems with performance. Oh yeah, the $232.00 converter from O'reilly's should be a factory OEM replacement. Good luckand let me know

Re: Catalytic Converter?

I replaced mine with an after marker Hi Flo cat and the car runs great. The dealership told me that I could put an after market one on and be just fine. They have to leave the o2 sensor or the car will throw codes. My car runs better than factory. I have never had this much power. It sounds awesome too. My car had no power, wouldn't shift right and was useing fuel like a v8. No everythings seems good. I'll wait and see.
