Fuel gauge problem
Hey guys, I am a new user. Foung this site trying to find info about a fuel gauge problem. I have one of those gauges that reads for a while, and then just bottoms out. It is intermittent at best. I know of five people with fairly new gmc or chevy trucks, and four have this same problem. Do you have any idea. Sending unit? Bad ground? I hope it is just a wire bad or something. Somebody told me to unplug it form under the dash and then plug it back in and it would start working. That didn't seem to work, assuming I got the right plug.
Help please carson |

Re: Fuel gauge problem
it is the sending unit. The connections get dirty; some have had success cleaning the contacts on the float with an eraser but this is a short term fix. There are pages about this problem, I have it as well.

Re: Fuel gauge problem
When I first purchased my Truck my gas gauge did the same thing, it looked like a pinball flipper it did it EVERY TIME I drove my truck... Very annoying!!
I Started running 93 octane from shell ( I use my Shell card.. its just convenience.) and adding a bottle of complete fuel system cleaner every two months. I was under the assumption that I had to wait till my fuel pump quit to get rid of the problem, because I wasn't dropping the tank and pissing away the $ if it wasn't broken.. I don't even remember when it stopped working erratic, one day my girlfriend made a comment about my gauge working again...and asked when I had fixed it ... Im thinking maybe running better quality gas and using system cleaner cleaned the contacts enough to read properly. Every now and then, Usually at fill up the gauge will tell me I have no gas (after I just put in $35.. lol.) I cant complain though It used to do it everyday without fail.. now its every couple of weeks for a minute or two. Good Luck -Jimmy

hey, it worked
Jimmy,
I took your advice and filled up with amoco ultimate, and then put a bottle of havoline complete fuel system cleaner in the tank. No it has gone from working about a minute a day, to working well over half the time in less than a tank. I am going to keep this up for a month and see what happens. I don't know if I can afford 93 octane much longer than that, and I don't want the old boy getting used to the good stuff, but it really seems to be helping out. thanks for the advice Carson |
