the top guide on my saturn 93 sl2 failed made a loud ticking noise -- baiscally it has a hard polymer between the metal of the guide and the chain the plastic shattered i had fun finding the pieces -- any way the plastic was gone and the chain was rubbing straight on the metal was able to fix that just by removing the valve cover and removing two bolts -- the majority of the plastic ended up in the valve chamber itself I'm sure i didn't get all of it out but oh well

Re: timming chain
So you can tell when you need a new timing chain because theres a clicking noise? SH*T haha...90k miles....guess its time for a new one. Anyone have instructions on replacing this? thanks

Re: timming chain
you can take the front cover off and inspect it, but with that much work you could just replace it. if the oil gets dirty/dark fast(in my case 700 miles) it is also a good sign of bad news.
very simplifyed how to: support engine with hoist remove engine mounts, belt, crank pulley loosen exhaust downpipe remove oil pan, valve cover, front cover replace all timing components that is a very basic how-to from memory, if you plan on doing it, i suggest getting a repair manual like Haynes or chiltons or such(i have and use both) |
