Honda door locks jammed..will not close the driverside door

I am having a problem with my 98 honda accord ex..today I was getting gas and when I get in the car to close the door, it was blocked by the mechnism to actually lock the door. I see what it looks like, it's a lil plastic yellow piece and under that is the metal lock....it's to the front. So I go to the passenger side to see where it needs to be and I cant get it back to where it needs to be..I dont know if I should be pushing forwards or backwards to put it back in place. It kinda seems like the lock is off track or just jammed. I need some help, I took my dad to go look at it, and I know for a fact that if he takes it to one of his friends to fix it they are going to destroy my door lock and then I'll have to pay for another lock. Can someone please help me!!! Thanks.

Try to hold the door handle in the open position then lock the door. You may need a new door lock actuator.
