Bypassing the ignition clutch switch.
I looking at installing a remote car starter on my standard 97 Cavalier and need to bypass the ignition clutch switch. Has anyone done this before and have any info on it? Thanks!

Re: Bypassing the ignition clutch switch.
You should be able to bypass the clutch switch. I have a 300zxTT and it does not have this feature. You can start it without the clutch pressed. I also am in a habit of always leaving it in neutral after parking inorder for my turbo timer to run after I remove the key from the ignition.

you are so wrong, sidewinder makes a standard tranny adapter for use with remote start... best buy used to sell em when they sold sidewinder products.... a friend of mine has a 99 mustang with standard tranny, and a remote start.... done the right way.... |

Re: Bypassing the ignition clutch switch.
While i thought other wise b4.... i will stand corrected.... Guess technology has come along way in the past few years... when i tried to get one installed on my G/F's car i was told not possible by 3 aftermarket installtion shops... but after doing some quick reaserch i have found some info i didn't know..most manual transmission remote car starters require a signal input for clutch bypass and a e-brake wire. When this is combined the unit enters reservation mode, meaning you drive the car into the driveway, tap the brake, pull on the e-brake, remove the keys (car stays running) open and close the door (checks for a signal fromthe doorswitch) and then you turn the vehicle off by using the remote. Now the remote starter knows that the vehicle is in neutral and all the safety checks are in place to allow it to remote start properly and safely. While i've been searching for an actual device they are few and far between and i approached the same places for install and they said they do not install them becuase of the liabiltiy of the device messing up your ignition due to the driver leaving the car in drive... while i am not sure about that... its will be hard to find a place to do it, let alone do it yourself... also they are not exactly leagal meaning they won't pass state saftey inspections

Also, Sidewinder never sold any such thing nor did DEI, the parent company did either. I know, I was a Sidewinder dealer for many years until I started my own shop. The part you are talking about is called a SPDT Relay. All it does is bypass the clutch switch. It is nothing special. The quick easy way is just to unplug the switch at the pedal but not recomend it. I will install on manual cars but I make sure to hook into the E-brake and also add a digital tilt sensor. What it does is "reads" the angle that the car is parked and sets itself then to go off if the car is rocked ever so slightly. So, if you leave it in gear and it starts to move, it stalls out. Also, some vehicles actually have a neutral switch like motorcycles. It's just that many people do not know this.
