Where's the EGR valve?
1st off, the car: 86 Civic GL 1488cc, EW1
The engine is idleing erraticly and stalling out.. If I quickly press the pedal to bring up the RPMs to say, about 4000, then let them quickly drop - the engine wants to die. I have turned up the idle adjusting screw to help with this problem (engine dieing) but it really only helps a little. I can keep the engine running by giving some throttle just when it starts to drop below 600-500 rpms, thats why I cranked up the idle adjusting screw up. But now the engine idles at around 1200-1500 and lops back and fourth sometimes - down to 700 RPMs and even dieing out. The engine runs great when you are going down the road, great acceleration, cruising, etc. Only when you try to idle do I have a problem. Any ideas why? I have checked the obvious like a vacuum leak. I used a vacuum tester and went over the whole system, so I feel pretty sure this is not the problem. I am under the impression that it may be the EGR valve (thats one of the things my Haynes says to check for this symptom), but I am not sure where it is. I'm not even sure what it looks like - the manual is very vague on its location. Can someone give me a verbal discription of its location, or perhaps take a picture and post it so that I could see where its located? Am I chasing the wrong thing? |

Re: Where's the EGR valve?
i had a similar problem once too when i didn't put the o-ring under the carb for the cvcc intake, i'm not sure of the design with the EW1 (i have an 83 civic EM1) but for the cvcc barrel on the carb the base plate extends up about 1 inch to the base of the carb (which is offset at that point) and there is an o-ring to seal it, when i left it out it would not run under 2k rpm but ran great over. what you are describing sounds like it might be a similar problem, vacuum leak, have you tried spraying carb cleaner anywhere while it is running, when you hit the leak the idle should improve for a moment.

Re: Where's the EGR valve?
I found the EGR valve, tested OK. I tried the carb spraying, idle increased no matter where I sprayed it, turnes out my air cleaner gasket has a leak around the base (where it mounts to the carb). I'm looking for a gasket, Advanced is ordering me one. I'll have to wait for it to come in before I can test again.
