Pinging with correct ignition timing

I adjusted the ignition timing on my car and when adjusted to the center red mark on the crankshaft, the car pings like hell. So I set it back to where there were two little red dots on my dizzy, now it stops. But why does it ping when it's adjusted properly? Does that mean my timing belt has skipped a tooth or something?

Re: Pinging with correct ignition timing

the pinging is caused by it being too far advanced, probably jumped a tooth or something, If it smooths out by adjusting the dizzy just leave it like that.

Re: Pinging with correct ignition timing

You might loose a little power or maby gain a little power due to the valves opening at a slightly differnt time, but it physically wont hurt the motor. If your bored and stuff pull it off and try it again, if you've got stuff to do it wont hurt anything to put it off till another time.

Re: Pinging with correct ignition timing

Umm...If it jumped a tooth I would really check out why to be safe. The belt could be streched or you may have a bad idler arm. Eather way if it snaps you have a boat anchor.

And no just changing the timing will not fix the issue as the valve timing would be off. But it wouldnt hurt anything.

Re: Pinging with correct ignition timing

The only thing I can't get is that there is a line stenciled on the metal tab, above the top dizzy bolt and when I got it, both sides where lined up, but with the correct timing there off. WTF?

Well, I guess I'll go put it back to the line. thanks
