'91 Caprice Classic Question

hey everyone, im a new Af'er. I have a question. Im just turning 17 next month and i am in dire need of a car. i have searched high and low for a decent used car on a low budget and have found nothing but a '95 Oldsmoblie Cutlass with no heat, shorted out power windows, a fuel gauge that rises with the push of the gas pedal, and the check engine light constantly flickering. that is.. until now. A friend of mine at work is selling a '91 Caprice Classic. he says that he thinks it has about 150,000 miles.. i think that is kind of high, but im not sure how long a caprice will last after 150k miles. he is only asking $500 for it, but it does need a fuel injection pump and a battery. i looked online and a fuel injection pump went for about $150 and we'll say a decent battery goes for $50. i like the whole shape of the body and stuff.. it is in decent condition. i just dont want it to shit the bed less than a couple of months after i buy it. I would appreciate some feedback and ideas. Thanks.
-Rob

The 305 V8 is known to last for 300,000 miles and longer with proper maintenance (spark plugs, oil and filter changes). The 350 V8 is also pretty rugged, but don't know if it will last as long.

I have 364K on my 85 Caprice with the 305 V8. Just passed inspection again.

At some point they added "OptiSpark" ignition electronics, under the waterpump, and a leaking waterpump can kill the expensive OptiSpark. Don't know if the 91 has OptiSpark.

Re: '91 Caprice Classic Question

The Opti-spark made its debut in Caprices in '93 with the LT1 and the L99 engines. In '91 & '92 they were TBI units on both the 5.0L & the 5.7L.

My '91 with a 5.0 currently has 290,000kms on it, and is still running strong although last month I had to change the intake manifold gaskets. I had an '83 Cap Classic that went around the clock (I have a pic of the odometer somewhere) I pulled over on the side of the road just to take a shot of it. The Chevy small block is one of the toughest motors around imo.... just make sure to keep up on regular maintenance and it should be good to you.
