95 cutlass Tranny question

Hello,

I recently had my transmission fluid replaced, filter & gasket changed.
My transmission pan was leaking before I had the service done. Now it doesn't.

I went for a long drive (1200km). After 600km, I checked the transmission fluid, and the color wasn't as bright. Also, there was a black residue left on the paper towel after I wiped the dip-stick. I asked a mecanic, and he said it was either metal, or some old oil from the tranny left over.

I also noticed that the transmission slips from time to time. It usually happens at very low speeds, or if I take off slowly from a red light. If I step on the gas, it doesn't slip. I did purchase some fluid from Canadian Tire for smoother shifting, but it doesn't stop it from slipping.

Thanks for reading up to this point! I had to put down the scenario so you guys don't waste your time with things I may have tried already.

Here's the questions:

Do I need to flush the tranny? Do I need to have part of it rebuilt?
Is there a chance of my transmission failing on me in the near future?

Thanks in advance for your reply!

Re: 95 cutlass Tranny question

From what you describe it sounds like your trans is going. You said you had it serviced with replacing the filter, fluid, etc and it still slips. You should take it to a trans place and see what they suggest. But most of the time when it starts slipping and you have enough fluid and have had it serviced, its going to go. I had mine remanfactured, came with a 3 year, 75,000 warranty. If you get it rebuilt you will only have a much shorter warranty

Hello ohenry5,

Thanks for the reply! I was afraid you were going to tell me that! This is the 3rd transmission in a year on this car. The current tranny is a used one with 140,000km (75000 miles) on it.

I'm not sure that I'll even keep this car with all the problems I've been having! The repairs have cost me more than I paid for the car!

Thanks for your advice!

No prob, that stinks that your on your third trans. Have you had all used trans? I would try getting a remanufactured one from Jasper Transmissions, thats where i got mine and as i said they come with a 3 year 75000 mile warrenty so if anything goes wrong it wont cost you anything. Anything else I can help, let me know.

Hello again ohenry5,

I saw the mechanic, and he told me not to worry about it.

There could be a bit of metal in the tranny, but it's normal for the 4T60E to slip at low speeds (less than 10 mph) because of the gear box, and pump. He suggested I get DuraLube for my transmission, and have it serviced again at 10000 KM (6000 miles).

He also said the black residue could be some left over trans fluid or oil since he couldn't completely flush the tranny.

Thanks again.

First off I dont know what the mechanic is talking about that the trans should slip at speeds less then 10 mph. I have never had that problem and have never heard of that before, I would be very leary about that. Maybe run it by someone at a dealership just to see what they say. Second, dont bother with the Duralube. I have a good friend thats a mechanic and others have said that stuff is not worth the money, no point in buying it. There is some stuff that was recommended by my friend and that I have read up on thats really good and is one of the only stuff thats worth adding to the trans, but right now I can not think of the name of it. Its stuff that the manufacturers add. When I do I will let you know. Yea you might have some black on the stick, thats normal everyone has a little of that, no biggie. Any other help let me know.
