Another first rally car post......

ya, ya I know... I did a search for this, but came up empty handed. Plus, I know you guys all love giving your 2 cents about which car to purchase..

This car I'm planning on will serve as an occasional daily driver and Rallycross hopeful and beater and killer. When I do use the car for commuting, I'd be putting on some miles, so reliability is of concern here. I have not thought of a possible rally car(for me, anyways) that would have a big v8 or anything, so fuel economy is basically covered. And on to the more often restriction: price! and ya.. something cheap will do. Something around 1500-2000. I'm sure that's doable. I'm the DIY type, and also have a few friends are are pretty competent mechanics.

For right now, my main focus is on an older VW GTI/Golf. I like the low price, the hatch, and the decent drivetrain(right? or am I wrong in this department?). What do you guys think about this car?

I also came across a few people recommending turbo awd DSM's. While I am a fan of these cars, I'm sure that reliability on this car would be much lower since my price bracket practically requires a car that was ridden hard and put away wet. But I guess it's always a possibility.

Am I overlooking anything else ??

So let me have it folks.

Re: Another first rally car post......

Mk 2 if you want lightweight but can deal with very little power and a rather flimsy chassis
Mk 3 or Mk 4 if you want something more rigid and powerful but heavier.
