Door/rear speakers
Can anyone tell me how do I change out the door and rear stock speakers on a 96 Honda Prelude. Does the door panels have to be removed? I am using my father's computer. He bought me the car for Xmas and some awesome Boston Acoustic 6 1/2 door and rear speakers for the car but was put in the VA hosp for ijuries that he sustained in the Army. I am his 17yo daughter and want to try and do them my self. Thanks, Amber

Re: Door/rear speakers
I haven't changed the speakers in mine yet, but for starters, try removing the grille cover on the doors, I think you can get to those that way. As for the ones in the rear deck, try to see if you can see any way of getting them out from inside the trunk. Try posting in the audio forum, you'll probably get more info there.

Re: Door/rear speakers
You definitely need to remove the panels to change the door speakers - do it carefully or you'll break the little plastic retaining tabs. But are you sure those 6 1/2" speakers will fit? The springs for the trunk lid sit right underneath the rear speakers - it severely limits space. I had to remove the springs to install my 6 1/2" Polk/Momo speakers.

Re: Door/rear speakers
The door speakers are not too hard to get to. There are 4 screws. One in the handle on the armrest, one behind the door handle and 2 on the outer brim of the door panel; one in the top right (drivers side) and one in the bottom left. Once you get the screw behind the door handle out you have to carefully pop that out (just get a screw driver behind it and pull) and disconnect the power window clips/lock clips. After that just get a screwdriver under the door panel and pull. Pop up all the plastic fasteners all the way around the bottom and sides. Then just pull up and the panel will slide out of where it sits in the window. If you have the SI you will have to get your hand up there to disconnect the power mirror switch. Then you can just unscrew the 3 screws, take out the old speakers and install the new ones.
For the rear speakers from inside the trunk there are 3 bolts (10mm I believe) loosen those, unclip the speaker wires and then from push up on the speaker. From inside the car you can take the whole speaker and cover. There are 3 screws that take the cover off and then 3 more to take out the speaker. Put the new speaker in and put the whole assembly back in the way it came out. For the speaker wires just clip the old ones and crimp them together with the new ones, just make sure not to mix up positive and negative. The wire with the stripe is the negative. Also 4th generation preludes do have 6 1/2 inch speakers all around. Once you have the new speakers installed you may want to get into the dash pods to disconnect the stock tweeters because that may cause imaging problems, but it also might not be noticeable.
