Re: average life of a clutch
I've got a 2001 Wolfsburg, and I'm pretty hard on my clutch. I've got 40k on it, and I haven't had any problems with slippage. I know what you mean about grabbing on hills though. It does almost feel like slippage, but it's been that way since it was new, and I just assumed that it's how it works. Have you checked with the dealer as far as having it adjusted so it grabs lower though?

I have a 97 jetta diesel that I bought as a demo from the dealer and that was the first thing that struck me when I took a test drive. I test drove more that one jetta at the time (all standards) and they were all the same. I never followed up on it but I suspect that it is because they use a ceramic clutch. Assuming that this is correct, the good news is that it will probably outlast the rest of your car. I have 240000 km (150000 miles) on my car and am still on the original clutch with no indications that it needs to be replaced anytime soon. As far as getting it rolling in first goes, its just an adjustment from what you're used to and it won't take long to get the feel for it.
