Unhappy Take off Door Handles..How??

About 7 months ago, i taped off, and masked my doors with plastic garbage bag so i could spray my handles black, then do a clear coat.

Now, i want to do it again, but i want to take off my door handles to do a much better job (sand/prep etc..). How is this done? I already took off my door panels, and there is no access to taking off the *outside* handles.. Am i missing something?

Please help if you could, thanks.

Re: Take off Door Handles..How??

97's are held on by two blind rivets. Lift up on the handle and look up behind it. Prop up the handle with a 1/2 inch by 4 inch dowel and knock out the center pin of each rivet. Then use a 1/4 inch drill to drill out the rivets being careful not to enlarge the holes in the door skin. Replace the rivets with Ford part number N805945-S102. Check to see if this part number is the same for your yearBird.

Re: Take off Door Handles..How??

Thanks 97bird, last nite i just taped off the both sections, and did a decent job of spraying/clear coating them.

Now that i know that, about the rivets, i'll give that a try in about a couple months when the paint looks non-new again.
