Question Converting a 2.2 to an auto transmission?

I was wondering if anyone has converted a S10 with a 2.2 and 5-speed to a auto transmission?
How much did it cost?
Problems encountered?
Thanks,
TEK

Re: Converting a 2.2 to an auto transmission?

You'll loose so much power with an automatic, and spend so much more fuel, I really don't know why you would want to do it. I'd like to switch my blazer from an auto to a 5 speed, just to make up for the lack of power a little.

You'll need the transmission, a flex plate(replaces the flywheel), torque converter, probably a drive shaft, and the yoke that goes with the auto.

You will also need some way to shift. Since you already have the hole in the floor, I'd get a hurst style floor shifter, and a boot for it. Otherwise you'll have to get a complete automatic steering columb with all the options yours has on.

There is probably an under dash wiring harnes just for the auto, that won't let it start unless your in park, or Neutral. you probably don't really need this, but it is safety.

After you get all this stuff you'll have to take everything apart, then change the parts to the new.

With air tools, you can expect write off 1 entire weekend for the job. 1 day if you've done it before.

Then you'll probably have to fiddle with the linkage and everything for a while until you are happy.

Try an automatic s-10 with a 2.2L at a dealer before you decide to go through all that trouble, and if you decide that you like the auto, I recomend that you talk to the dealer about using your truck as a trade in.

Good luck
