Question A career choice

I am trying to decide a career. I am sure it will be in computers but i dont know which field. I am thinking of being a computer programmer. But i have talked to some people that say its a good field and others say it dosen't have job security. Also I would be competing with people overseas, who pretty much grow up doing this stuff. A am pretty good at it but I dont want to waste my time and money getting a degree and find out later i cant even use it. Is it a good field or not?

Re: A career choice

My dad is a computer programmer and I just asked him about this for you and he told me that the job security right now kinda really sucks unless you work for the government like him, since they don't really lay people off like big companies have had to do.

Re: A career choice

I'm currently in high school, my senior year, but I've already completed some college level courses, and I currently work for a non-profit telephone answering service. There my primary duty is computer programming, but I do other stuff involving computer (i.e. support). Yeah, it's true that a lot of the jobs are going overseas, but most of them are support type of job, especially the free kind of support. Companies like Microsoft, where you pay like $250 for support do not outsource. I've had to talk to their support about 2 problems, talked with a total about 5 people though, and they pretty much all spoke perfect engilsh, and I'm pretty sure that it they were here in the US. As for programming jobs, most of them will probably stay here, especially if you work for a smaller company whose main focus is not programming (I mean the primary product they sell if not software). Also, if you have a kind of job in which you do programming and you're on call, then that pretty much won't get outsourced. Also if you go into a specialized field, like for me is phone systems, the job will probably be harder to find, but that will most likely not get outsourced.
