I have been hearing this all over the place, R.M.S , what is this????????

i forget what RMS is an acronym for but basically real world RMS is how much continuous power a coil can handle at any given impeadence .

root mean square is what it stands for.. but thats not that important.. fryman dont forget as well in terms of a divice thats actually putting out power its the rating of continuous power its putting out.. but youre right too.. in terms of speakers an rms rating is how much continuou power they can handle

But not all speaker RMS ratings are real world continuous ratings. 'tis why i like DD and JL because the give real world RMS, Peak, and Reccomended music power handleing. many companies will put 1200w peak. but that peak lasts for milliseconds and is tested as the woofer its self. not as a coil. so the coil will be in motion. peak should be massed more on a SPL burp type peak. peaking for 3-7sec. also, RMS is sometimes rated in 10-20sec intrevals. not what you cna put on the coil and let it sit there for a few minutes or more.

yeah i wish all companies would have a standard so lesser brands couldnt play the number games that they do by claiming unrealistic numbers and going by peak power.. oh well i guess thats why its good to be educated in this kinda stuff.. which is what i found out quickly...

RMS= Really Mean Subs


thats why u always hear..."dont look for max, look for RMS"









i dont' really look for RMS because i never have more than 200w going through my subs. I just don't like to listen to music loud. 200 is more than enough for me.


many companies rates differently.


the coil thermal rating depends on many factors so there is no absolute rating. companies will rate however they feel is suitable.
