On the 1.9L....center yourself on the blue ford emblem and lean in...look thru the shiny pipes of the intake manifold on the drivers side (the right side on how you are oriented)...the starter is just below these pipes, fairly high up on the engine...it may say Motorcraft 12v and will be black centrally with aluminum ends.

A Haynes manual with instructions on how to remove/re-install is a good idea...~$15 at auto parts shop, such as Autozone, Advance Auto, Oreillys, Pep Boys, etc.

or if you dont find it that way. if you change your own oil, get under there and look where your oil filter is, then look to the left and up a bit right under the intake plenum, it looks just like another oil filter attached to the transmission.

Agreed with you two. Go to the side opposite your battery and lean in to look behind the intake manifold (the 4 large tubes going into the block). Under this should be several cylanders. One of the cylanders should have two bolts coming out, one of which is attached to a thick open wire. That is the starter. Note: I found it was easier to remove from the bottom. Also, if you are turning your key and your car isn't starting, this migth not be the starter/solenoid.

My 94 std 1.9l actually had a dealership instaled security killswitch that gave out after all these years. If it is that, which is a good possibility, you'll need to do some rewiring. If this is beyond your automotive abilities, just suck it up and go to a mechanic. It should run no more than $120-$130.

Good Luck.
