Failing Brakes
Hi Guys,
My Taurus '94 LX has all 4 discs & no ABS I got my brakes done a couple of months back, i.e resurfaced all 4 rotors new pads on all 4 wheels & also replaced the master cylinder, (cuz the pedal was going all the way to the floor) & ofcourse replaced the brake fluid..... All this was done at the local brake shop, so I guess he did the right bleeding & all. My problem is, while am at highway speeds & hit the brakes suddenly, they take about 2 seconds to kick in, the initial 2 seconds are very scary cuz it feels like total loss of brakes, & then the brakes kick in like they are supposed to. When I try to pump, the problem repeats at every 3rd pump. I showed it to the local brake guy, he said the brake booster is going. Anyway I can check for the brake booster myself.....?? Does that even sound like the brake booster? Any brake booster tests? Should i check for anything else that could cuz the above? Car still stops but I guess the brakes arent reliable. Any inputs? Thanx in advance for your inputs Fuz |

I have purchased a Haynes Techbook called Automotive Brake Manual. Very good about the theory, maintenance and repair procedures. Also has details on how to diagnose problems.
Seems like your brake guy has a clue to your problem. The cost of a booster is about $60 at Advanced Auto. With the age of your car and the fact that the Master Cylinder was being replaced I would have offered the booster replacement as well. They are connected together. Would not have been a big deal labor wise. |
