I have a 98 Chevy S10, I've noticed that it seems to count miles rather quickly, by this I mean, in my job I drive the company vehicle a lot much more them my truck, I average 90 miles a day on company cars. I drive my truck from my house to my work and back. And I average 80 miles in a day which isn’t right at all, I live 5-10 minutes from my job. Is it possible that the counter in my truck is messed up?

I've never heard of that happening before. Does your speedo itself seem acurate?

I supose that it's possible that you have a metric speedo, with a mile face plate on. Then it would go up 16km, instead of 10 miles, and you might never know.

The best thing to do is drive along the highway, where they have the mileage markers.

Or you could mark off a 10 mile route with the company truck, then drive the same route with your truck... But it might be your company truck out instead.

Do you have the stock tires and rims on it?

nope right now i have winter rims and tires, but this happened way before I changed the tired. Its weird. My company vehicle might just as well be out, but I still know its not a 80 mile trip from my house to my work... because I can not drive the speed limit and get to my job in 5 to 10 minutes dependent on traffic.. So I figure its my truck :S

it could be geared or tire sizes are off. if your mileage is off by that much well then your speed is off as well. compare speeds with another vehicle. if your speed is on and your odometer is off then your gauge has failed or like overboardproject said you might have a km speedo and tach. your odometer says your going 80miles but if it is actually 80km then your only going 4.5 miles.

uhhhh, you sure about that? 80km = 4.5miles?

speed seems to be right i've compared to other cars on the road. I'm actually going on a road trip tonight and it should be around 217 miles so i'll test it for sure then

if it's reading in Km it should read about 340miles.

If that's what's wrong GM should fix it free of charge as long as no one ever tampered with it... no mater how old the truck is... (their mistake) in my opinion

So you have bigger tires on it?

Even larger tires will only off set it a percentage of a 10th and offset the mph by a couple of miles an hour plus or minus (depending on the tire size) In order to offset it that much he would need a 12" lift with 50 or 60" tires on it. More than likely if he is only driving 10 mins to work and it's showing 80 miles either the VSS is skewed or he's reading in kmh on the digital odometer display.

Have you changed your stereo at any time?
There is a wire that links the speedo to the stereo (I assume for auto volume control).
I put a different year GM AM-FM CD player in my 98' S10 and the speedo quit working until I bent over that connector.
I know this may be a long shot, but if you have changed the radio you might try disconnecting it for a day and see if the readings are more correct.
