'88 Civic hatch...speaker/head unit swap w/newer honda OEM parts?
Hi, I picked up an '88 Civic hatch base model 4 speed, and both front speakers are shot. In the past w/my Subarus and my grandparent's Camry, I have been able to buy a factory head unit and/or speakers from a newer model, that plugs right up w/zero wiring.
(ie, any '95+ Subaru is a plug and play deal w/a WRX 6 disc head unit, and a '97 Tacoma head unit plugged right into my grandparent's '91 Camry) Can anybody tell me what years and model of Honda's I can swap headunits and/or front speakers with and have it all be plug and play? Thanks! Mark

I can say that all speakers are plug and play since the front are 6" 1/2's so any ones out of any civic of that size will fit. Backs are usually either 6" 1/2's or 6" x 9"'s, but you'll have to get the rear trays to hold the speakers up in the back with the rare speaker mounting kit. They will only hold 6" 1/2's.
With the head unit, I dunno. The 5th gen (92-95) civics might be swappable but then again, why not just get a good aftermarket head unit like Pioneer, Panasonic, Blaupunkt, etc. You don't always have to get a stock one ya know!

You can buy the wiring harnesses from best buy or wherever you get your new headunit from. aftermarket almost always sounds better too.
I've got a Pioneer headunit, eclipse audio speakers (actually pretty decent) in the front, Polk 6x9's in the back and two MTX 12"s in the trunk. Doesn't sound to shabby.

Re: '88 Civic hatch...speaker/head unit swap w/newer honda OEM parts?
Thanks. My WRX has a 140 db JL Audio/MB Quart sound system, and my jdm WRX swap has a Sony-based system that metered over 130 db
But I only spent $650 for the Civic, and its used sparingly, since I prefer to use one of the other cars I'm just looking for a mild improvement over the 16 year old AM/FM headunit...I usually end up going all out, and spending more $$$ than I planned, so I'm trying to keep my head straight, and just find a CD player headunit that will get the job done, along w/some speakers that don't sound like they have tears in them. It looks like $30 on ebay will do the trick for a CD headunit, and I'm working on some stock speakers for $40. I just want to be able to clearly hear the tunes, not set off car alarms as I go by![]() You guys have been very helpful, thanks for all the replies! Mark

Go check Wally World. They're bound to have a reliable, cheap cd player and speakers.
