car vibration/shaking
I first noticed my cars handling sucks on the highway the first day i got it....When i go past 60MPH the car shakes violently and its wicked annoying.....Since my tires were pretty much bald..i replaced them and got a 4-wheel alignment......For some reason it still shuddered and shook on the highway......MY shocks/struts were going out too so i got those replaced and got another alignment.......I thought i had finally solcved my problem but as soon as i got onto the highway again...the damn bitch still shakes and virbates at any speed past 60MPH

Re: car vibration/shaking
What do you have in the rear end? Open, limited slip, locker, spool?
My '69 had a similar problem, though it happened around 45-50mph. What I did is remove the center section from my 9" and stuck the axle shafts in it without the case. I then turned the yolk over with it bolted to a stand and watched the endplay of the axle shafts. One moved up and down .75". At low speeds, it wasn't enough of a difference to cause a vibration, since the bearings could hold it in place and the shocks could dampen any vibration. Once I got goin fast enough, it would vibrate in pulses... fade in vibration and fade out.. probably 1 'pulse' every second. Unfortunately, you most likely have an 8.8" axle, which you can't take the center out to test like in a 9". You probably have to take it to a shop and have them run some tests on your differential. |

vibration
Might also check your driveshaft to make sure it is not bent....my 96 had a bent driveshaft and I replaced it with an aluminum driveshaft...stopped the vibration in it's tracks.

vibration
Actually, the cheapest I've seen the driveshaft for is about $179.00...but it is money well spent in any case...

Re: car vibration/shaking
one thing you should also check is the brake rotors. I had a similar problem and I fixed it by scraping any debris between the rotor and the spindle

Re: car vibration/shaking
Driveshaft is a good possibility. Check steeda.com for an aluminum driveshaft, or a Ford racing and performance parts store.
Sounds like your ball joints could be shot also. Have them inspected and have new ones installed that are greasable. When I installed new ones on my ride, it was like driving a new car. One more thing to check, is the motor mounts. Ive replaced mine (both sides) once already, and one is cracked as of now. That would also cause a lot of shaking and vibration. |
