Any SMOG legal ways to boost performance of 96' 3.1L V6?
Ignition systems, Exhaust systems, Computer upgrades.... Anything? I'm looking for increased performance and mileage.
Thanks! - Joel Penick

There are a number of things you can do:
1. K&N flter system 2. Put a dual exhaust system on there. It'll cost around $400 for a good one, but it'll boost you about 25 to 30 HP. 3. Use Bosch or AC Delco plugs 4. Use throttle body cleaner to clean your throttle 5. Flush the cooling system 6. Buy the NOS in a can. $20.00 at WAL MART. It really cleans the engine well! 7. Clean the gaskets & headers. 8. User Dura-Lube in your engine. 1L Dura Lube, 4L oil. Have fun! |

Wait, you can actually put dual exhaust on these things and keep it smog legal? If this is true, where can I find more info on this? Any parts y'all can suggest? I'm used to building classic muscle cars, so I'm kinda clueless as to where to find info on cars like this.

Yup! you can put a dual exhaust on there, that's smog legal.
You cut the pipe after the catalyctic converter, and then there's the dual muffler system, that's why it's $400.00 Otherwise, you can get the single muffler, dual exhaust, but I don't think it'll pass an emissions test. Remember, the body & engine are the same as the Grand Prix from 93 to 97, and the Grand Prix had dual exhaust. On the Cutlass Supreme, there's actually place to install the dual exhaust without much effort! The OLDFIELD exhaust is probably the best, at around $400.00. Your vehicle will pass emissions (since it's actually a step better than the GM stock dual exhaust that came on the Grand Prix), and you'll have about a 30HP boost. I'm installing one on my 95 Cutlass in the spring! |

Re: Any SMOG legal ways to boost performance of 96' 3.1L V6?
i was just wondering, your talkin about a y pipe after the cat and then dual mufflers, i would think (if its possible on a cutlass being that its a front wheel drive) that true dual exhaust from the headers back would be more of a power boost, although you would have to find room for 2 cats as well as 2 mufflers and all the piping, im not all that familiar with v-6 cutlass' but my brother does have a 90 cutlass supreme with the high output quad four and a 5 speed manual tranny as well, quick car just needs work at the moment, however if you want a really fast motor for your car, the high output quad 4 is the most potent motor from oldsmobile, rated at 187 stock hp. just an idea to throw around.

You can add a dual exhaust and it should be no problem. Forget about the grand prix, the Cutlass supremes came with dual exhaust if you had the 3.4L. So all you have to do is find a cutlass supreme with the 3.4 and you will see how the dual exhaust is done. The cutlass came with the 3.4 all the way up to the 96 year i believe, it was then discontinued in 97. So as i said all those cars had them and everything is exactly the same on those cars as the 3.1L so it should work, no prob.

Re: Any SMOG legal ways to boost performance of 96' 3.1L V6?
just use dual hi flow cats and 2 turbo mufflers in the back (flowmaster, magnaflow whatever). Magnaflow makes a hiflow cat that has some special coating that a lot of hi flow cats dont that itll pass emissions. Try to use mandrel bent pipes. Make a Cold air intake for your car. Use good plugs (platinum plus fours) good wires like msd universal helicore.
If you can afford it port and polish your heads, scrum your intake plenum ports, clean your throttle body, relearn your IAC, get a custom chip burned for your car, check out the supercharger for the 3.1 from rsmracing. |
