Changing the 2 Crankshaft/Crankcase Sensors easy?

After months of daily idle/surges while sitting at a red light I had these repairs done below to hopefully solve the problem. It has not stopped yet but there are more repairs to go. To remind other Aurora drivers who also have had this problem and different fixes that worked for them also. How hard is it to replace the crankcase, crankshaft sensors? I am new at this so correct me if there are 2 sensors for each or just 2 crankshaft sensors that might cause the shutoff, surges at lights? Can I replace these by myself and how easy is it? What causes this? We should all rally to make this problem a recall! There are many other posts related to this idle, surge problem. Thank you all for your feedback much appreciated!

1.Throttle body cleaned out.
2.Camshaft sensor replaced (Problem stopped for a few days, came back)
3.Egr checked, fine. Vacum lines checked. Pvc valve fine.
4.Radiator dex cool flush & fill at Expressway lube. Expensive!
5. Fuel Filter. Radiator pressure test fine.
6. 3 step fuel injection cleaning at the stealership. I have also used some stp fuel cleaners & marvel mystery oil in the gas tank. 7. Some recommended the CRANKCASE SENSORS I have not done them yet due to funds and trying less expensive repairs, maintenance.
8. FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR due to leaking fuel & they cleaned it up. I replaced under a year ago. Problem started back from the dealership. Then stopped for many months... later, came back. 9. PCM? FUEL PUMP? EXHAUST MANIFOLD? Man its hard to save money with this car but you gotta love it!!! I do! Any ideas?

Re: Changing the 2 Crankcase Sensors easy?

Anybody help out? I checked the 97 Aurora/Buick Manuals and they just show a schematic but not detail on what exactly what to do step by step. Anybody know another site or suggestion?

Procedure for 1996 Aurora with two sensors , dunno if yours is the same

Jack up front, support on axle stands
Remove sensor electrical plug
Undo sensor bolt
Remove sensor

Install opposite

When replacing tighten sensor bolt to 89 lb. in.

Update on sensors...Replaced both crankshaft sensors drove around many, many miles also cleaned out throttle body, plate even more and no surges no stalling (not even one) at lights or while idling yet! Hopefully that problem has been terminated before winter starts. Thanks for all your help with different repairs and diagnostic advice. This Forum is great!

StEaLtHyUfO,

You're welcome. I'm glad the sensor change went well. It is good to hear when Aurora owners complete a successful D.I.Y.

Thanks right back at you Isnibs! The ride now on local streets and the highway is incredible! So SMOOOOOOOTTHHHHHHHHHH!!! These 2 repairs really made a difference. Its only been a couple of days but hey, why not enjoy it! The difference is unreal. Also I maintain her better than anything. I will wait it out for about 7 days to see if it continues well. Now I would like to get a pic on this board next of her. She looks good. Have some nice ones...This forum & all of you have helped out big time and I've learned a lot about cars, tools, repairs parts and this very decent ride! Thanks again.

Just a quick update...Its been over a week she has not had one shut off while idling at a light and no surges also!!! Everything has been perfect since I changed the CRANKSHAFT SENSORS. I hope this continues... will check back much later & I send good karma your way. Also, I hope this replacement solves this similar and hard to diagnose issue that happens with a lot of the Aurora's.
