Problem with Stealth

Alright, this has just recently started to happen, and everytime that I put on the gas, at about 3000 RPM'S i get this really high pitched noise and it continues on. The only way that there isnt that high pitched noise is if its below 3000 rpm's. and it's on every gear, so the problem im thinking is maybe a timing belt..?

I have this problem on my car too. I think I don`t know for a fact but I believe it is loosing compression. So I ordered new piston rings for my car and should be getting them installed this week. If you rev your car up does smoke come out of your car? On mine it does which has led me to believing it`s loosing compresion with the combination of the high screetching sound of air leaking out.

Re: Problem with Stealth

yeah, and hopefully soon im getting rid of the ticking by going out and buying new lifters. I also heard that cleaning the lifters really good works too.. but i dunno. Might just go with new ones.

Re: Problem with Stealth

so you think that clicking noise under the hood could be a lifter tick? how much will that cost you? also my car does smoke when i rev it up cold then goes away after a short while.

Yeah I think it might be loosing compression then because after it has warmed up it will seal the pistons better because when the pistons get hot they expand.

Re: Problem with Stealth

they sell the 99 lifters for $300 on ebay...elsewhere much more. And yes the tick tick tick you hear is the lifters, and they arent damaged, they're clogged from what i've been told so they aren't hurting anything but your ears.

Did you do a compression test 3000-GTO before you ordered piston rings?

Re: Problem with Stealth

Uhh, I think the schreeching noise could be the timing belt, my dad had the same problem with his car, and had to end up replacing the belt (but he has a 95 dodge ram van...)

Re: Re: Problem with Stealth

No I actully probably should have gotten my compression checked out first but I think that's what it is anyway. I just had my timing belt replaced so I know it's not that.

osok_deadeye_21--> Lifter tick will cost the price of lifters + installation (but you can always install them yourself!) Check the FAQ, i've posted an addendum to Lifter Tick, and there are 4 places i've found that you can get lifters for under $400. I also have found installation instructions, so i'll post them soon on the FAQ section. The dealer quoted me a price of $51.99 per lifter, which would come out to around $1200 for a set of 24. Also, expect to be charged a labor rate of $70 an hour!

Technical_Automan--> i'd be wary of getting internal engine parts off e-bay, unless you have some sort of gaurantee or assurance of product quality. In the FAQ i've posted the names/numbers of businesses that sell 3rd gen lifters. The main thing i would be worried with is whether or not the lifters are USED, REFURBISHED, or in the best case NEW. Keep in mind they are an internal engine part, so mechanical functionality is critical.

Re: Problem with Stealth

The Screaching Noise is the timeing belt... they do make a anti screach spray i hear that works... it just oil i think... and for loseing compression and white smoke just at start thats the vaulve guide seals... its very domenent on mitsubishis that the rubber seal will shrink and let oil into the cylender and loose compression.
