Question about painting

I was wondering how easy/hard it was to paint your car and have it look nice. I have no experience on this and wanted to repaint my rear bumper. Is this even possible for someone with no experience to learn and have it come out good. Also where would I learn more about doing this. I saw some people that have painted stuff and it looked good just wondering if anyone has any tips. Thanks for any help.

if you want it to look good, dont use just spray cans. get those actually sprayer things that use compressed air i think to spray. you buy the paint, pour it in the sprayer-thing (forgot what its called) and just spraying light coats. dont forget primer, and sand paper. make sure you have patience cause it takes a long time. sand between coats and if there are any imperfections just dont spray over and try to cover it. for a first timer, i wouldnt suggest a whole front bumper, go practice on something smaller.

If your bumper is now mis colored ... I would remove the old paint first. then repain. And like AZN posted if you f\have a real sprayer use that instead of spray can. Iwas able to get away with using a can because I was painting the bottom of my car iand it was black .... if your are doing your bumper you will need to do like 5 even light coats and then clear to match you car .....

yeh, its hard not to get dust and little particles from sticking on the paint while you spray. you will want to use an airbrush, not just a spray can for the entire bumper. i have painted lip spoilers and side moldings (skirts) with cans and they turned out really well...but i wouldnt do it on my entire bumper....

Get it done professionally, should run you less than $200. Just take it off, do the body work if it needs it. The bumper is a large area to try with spraypaint. But if you want to try it...

Air Compressor - $250+ (dont forget the moisture trap - $100+)
A really good air gun (dual action) - $200, more like $500+ for a professional one.
Sand paper - 300 to 600 grit wet dry (scuff the whole bumper to make it smooth but the paint will grab)
You can have the paint matched at a paint supply, no not Home Depot, talk to them about the right systems that go with one another. Youll need....Primer...Paint (a couple of light coats)....clear coar (a couple of "wet" but light coats) 1 quart should be more than enough of each.

Most professional painters use a system that mixes with catalysts to help the paint cure so there is a limited working time with each. Just my two cents.

Honestly, go get it done...it will save you a lot of trouble...

Don't do it yourself. Especially if you don't even know what to do. You'll kick yourself after the first mishap.

yeah, i actually got rear ended.. all it did was chip a good portion of paint off the bumper and cracked my right rear tail light assembly. so anyways, i got a check for $1100 from the assailant's insurance company and instead of using it to get a new bumper i'm just going to take mine off, remove the paint and bring it to a body shop. as for the the tail light, i found one for around $50. so i figure i'll pocket like $700.
