throttle body cleaner

before i go do something really stupid,
i wanna ask...if there is anybody who has
clean their throttle body (+ intake manifold)
from what i heard if a cleaned one should greatly
increase your mpg(*idunno about the power thou)
If done wrong, bad stuff happens(*BAD)

anyway, i wanna clean my throttle body including my
intake manifold, if there is anybody who knows how to do this
*share the knowledge* PlEASE!!!!
5s-fe 91 engine..
i looked thru the throttle body plate..and it was all gunky and black
this might explains why i get 18 mpg in the city and i'm guessing
the owner before me never cleaned it(that bastard)

Re: throttle body cleaner

you can either get a spray that you use whilst your engine is running its easy to use, or you can remove it from your car and clean it by hand using something like parafin. Personaly I`d just use the spray but I`m lazy.
But If you remove the whole lot you can polish it up which should improve things a little but you`d have to check exactly what you can and cant remove in the polishing process, I believe alot of unnecessary flow restricting bits can be removed by machining them off. (nothing functional, just casting blemishes etc) But if your car is stock I wouldnt bother unless future upgrades are planned. Good luck.

Re: throttle body cleaner

The spray I use is by Ecotech, it also decokes the engine (or so it claims). warm the engine up to running temp and spray it directly into the intake, remove the oxygen sensor if you have one in the intake. Use the whole tin in two minute bursts. After the first `go` you can wipe away any excess bits that wont shift if you can get to them with a lint free cloth (be very careful). But yes, pretty much anywhere. Dont breath in the fumes cause it will give you a killer head ache, ie dont do it in your garage.

Re: throttle body cleaner

Guys, thanks alot, i clean my throttle body, and also sprayed some in my intake manifold and my friend decided to give it a "water treatment" the hell i know what it does.

*it serve water into one of the 3 vacuum at the end of the intake manifold*left side *while doing so, White smoke comes out*water i'm guessing..

anyway, WOW smooth accelleration, no more heistating, i hope this cures my 18 mpg problem
