Question 1988 I'm stuck in reverse!

Hello all;
I'm new here so thank you for any assistance that you can offer.
While I was driving my 88 735i , the tranny became stuck in reverse when I was shifting to park. The automatic shifter slides back and forth freely but I can not get out of reverse . Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks, Mike
