1993 740i Oil Filter
Hello,
I am going to change the oil at home as opposed to taking it in. First time doing it. After breezing through the Bentley manual, I see that it shows me the actual filter and o-rings, but it lays them out on a table for the photo---not showing me the location on the car. I haven't got underneath yet to take a look and I thought I might post here before getting started and see if there is any advice on location or other things to look out for along the way. Also, do standard automotive stores in the U.S. carry the washer that must be replaced for the oil pan drain plug? ER |

The oil filter on your car is accessibe from the top, in the engine compartment, driver's side, near the front of the vehicle. It's a cylinder about 4 inches in diameter and about 8-9 inches deep. It has a large plastic cover with a huge "nut" on top.
Local autoparts stores probably do have the metal washer you're talking about. Surprisingly, the cheapest place I found to buy oil filters is from the BMW dealer. Cost is about $12 and includes everything you need including the o-ring. Discount Auto wanted $25 and no o-ring. Go figure. |

Re: 1993 740i Oil Filter
You will eather need a large adjustable wrench or a 36mm socket to take off the oil filter. Also with BMW's great ideas the filter assembly is hled down by 2 rubber gromets which will most likely break. If they do they arnt needed to be replaced but if your worried about it you can find them at your deal for around 5$ max for 2.
