3.8L engine will not accelerate

3.8L engine in 1988 Ford Thunderbird, will not accelerate when the throttle is advanced... new tps didnt help.. it just gasps for air...but it will set and idle perfectly...any ideas....???

did you mean that it doesnt move at all, or it rolls forward at idle speed only?

i mean that the engine wont increase in rpms..... there is nothing wrong with the transmission... this all happens with the car in neutral with the engine running....

so what exactly happens when you press the gas? what does it sound like? does it go forward in drive? backwards in reverse?

when the gas pedal is depressed the engine sounds like it is sucking air, but isnt getting gas...it will move in either direction if put in gear....
