What engine coolant should I use? I read all these discouraging posts of not to use Dexcool but don't say what to use? I have been using Dexcool like the owners manual requests. I have a 02 Impala at 125k and have not changed the engine coolant. I don't notice any sludge of clumps of anything in my radiator. Any advice?

Re: If not Dexcool then what?
In the mid to late 90s, GM added pellets (kind of like Bar's Leak) which is what caused the clumps and blocked heater cores. They stopped doing it in 99 or 2000.
When the time comes, flush and refill with 50/50 mix of Dexcool and Distilled Water. //2000CAYukon |

Is there anything wrong with Prestone?

I have used it.
They have a 50/50 mixture of Dexcool/water formula. As long as the label states GM approved. |

Re: If not Dexcool then what?
Note that Dexcool is not compatible with ethylene glycol type coolants (like green prestone). If you want to switch to a ethylene glycol type coolant, you must flush all of the old Dexcool out of the system.
The Prestone Extended Life is compatible with Dexcool. They also have just come out with a new prestone that is compatible with all kinds of coolant. I have not used it so I don't know how well it works. //2000CAYukon |

I heard there are different alcohol types in the dexcool as for whats in the regular "green" type. I was told that if you put the wrong one in it will damage parts. But i was also told if it has the GM approved stamp on it, it will be fine RIght? I just want to make sure i get it right because i as well want to take the dexcool out of my car. If i have a warranty, will if be void if it doesn't have the dexcool in it????

Re: If not Dexcool then what?
You can switch over to "green" without issues. Just flush the system first. It will void your warranty so if you have any warranty issues, flush it and put the Dexcool back in. They will never know the difference.
![]() Personally I switched all of my to the green type a couple of years ago. NO MORE PROBLEMS. With Dexcool my 98 Buick had gelling and my 94 Chevy had scale. After several attempts to flush and replace had no sucess, I flushed them really well and put in the old green coolant. Thank the Lord, not another issue. Good Luck.
