New to driving and camaro
Hey all, first post here. I'm 16 and I'm new to driving and my first car may be a camaro. It's a 1987 camaro, 8 cylinder, 62k miles, automatic and it's for 1900, the body's in good shape it just needs a little interior work and a new paint job. I'm just wondering if this is a good car first car for a 16 year old, such as is it good on gas and how it will do in the winter since that season is coming up. Any help will be appreciated, thanks. Here's an image of what it looks like.

Re: New to driving and camaro
i havnt driven a v8 camaro in the snow. i have a v6 camaro went pretty good, just dont goose it. but as far as the car goes she's a fine machine a new paint job will work wonders for her, are you going to keep it blue? and i believe that it is a excellent first car, just be careful in it, until you get used to her power.

I agree with tacoma. I only wish my first car was a Camaro...I made sure my second one was! I'm sure you'll love driving her. Be careful and enjoy.

Yeah I am thinking about keeping it blue, maybe a metallic blue. If not blue then most likely silver, which do you think will work? My dad had a 69 camaro but lost it to my parents devorce and my mom sold it so I want to get one back for the family. I've never driven a camaro before and don't know much about cars, other than they're really expensive
So are camaros good on gas? I already am paying 85 dollars a month for insurance, not much left for gas if i want to fix her up. |

Re: New to driving and camaro
well your getting a good deal on the insurance, and i would keep her blue, but id get the blue with the metal flake in it, id also try and find a gfx kit off of a z28 do finish her off. as far as the gas mileage goes if your easy on it it should do fine.

Re: New to driving and camaro
see that maroon z28 in my sig, the bottom trim around the bottom of the car is the ground effects,
they would really set your car off

tacoma I have a v6...wish it was a z28! I'd probably get myself in trouble tho. max, I think you should keep it blue too. My first camaro was metallic quazar blue....it was beautiful, but the woman who had it before me didn't take very good care of her at all, so she gave me some problems. My red camaro is gorgeous....the previous owner loved her just as much as I do and kept her in good shape. She's great on gas mileage....17 or 18 mpg.

Re: New to driving and camaro
sounds like a great starter car.
gas mileage - depends, around town, if you hammer it, gas mileage will be poor. but on the highway, if you baby it, and just cruise, ive gotten 26mpg out of my TPI 350. in winter - they do alright, but the back end can get pretty squirrly, use your head, slow down for turns, dont hammer the gas, pretty much, drive like its winter time, and youll be fine.

Re: New to driving and camaro
ugh,if only my first car had been a camaro! my first car was an 81 subaru station wagon. and that's a smokin deal you got on the insurance, especially for a 16 year old.

I would suggest putting some extra weight in the back end of your camaro for the winter. Sandbags should do the trick. I would also make sure your heating equpiment works too. Unfortunately, I just got caught in the snow storm in my 94 Z28 yesterday (Wed) in Missouri. I am 17 and get out of school early everyday for work program. Well, I thought the snow wasn't going to hit until after 12, but it was actually 10, so it snowed for about an hour before I got out. The roads were horrible. The seal for my heater core is cracked, so it sucks in cold air and I don't have rear-defrost. I had no visibility and fogged windows. So I pulled over onto the shoulder to wipe down my windows, and as I try an pull out, my tires started spinning. I finally got out onto the road and drove 25-35 the entire way home. At stops, my idle would sometimes spin the tires too. I scared the shit out of my because she's my baby and I just got her back in August. Luckily, I have a secondary vehicle, so I think she's done. But that's my first scare for the winter season.

Here in canada got hit with some ice and snow and had some fun with the 454 silverado but yea im 17 and main thing is if you start to feel alittle spin out let off the gas..no brake and she'll grip back up. Also donuts in the shoppin center after hours is priceless.
