1977 Dodge 440 in motorhome

I have a Dodge 440
burns oil @ 1qt every 200 - 300 miles
I have taken compression test @ 145 in every hole (132-150)
spark plugs foul with large deposits on the plugs
when I remove them I marked the top, then screwed them out, the deposits all seem to be toward the top ( or valve side of the plugs)
I replaced the valve seals but this didnt seam to help at all, should I have the valve guides replaced?? what do you guys think??
any helpful clues or suggestions would help
Thanks ..SNAKEBIT..

Re: 1977 Dodge 440 in motorhome

Snakebit,
This is what happens when you run unleaded gas in a big block. You valve guides are probably all pitted. Use titanium. In the meantime, you can try using a lead substitute and STP oil treatment. It should reduce you oil consumption, maybe even to a tolerable level.

What Kind of motorhome is this? I'm just curious because I have an M300 chassis in a '72 Winnebago motorhome and I enjoy restoring older motorhomes and Mopars.

There's a lot of useful information on the M300/375 and M400 Dodge Chassis (and the 413/400/440 318/360 motors) at:

www.classicwinnebagos.com
If your motorhome is a Winnebago, I would urge you to join the group and view the galleries. They're a good bunch of guys over there.

and also,

Sorry to give you bad news about your valve guides.

Slantsixness
(Tom)

Re: 1977 Dodge 440 in motorhome

thats what I was thinking so I might as well pull the heads off, it is a 1977 Winnebago 29'. I am looking to update and my wife wants a bed in the back.
We now have 2 couches, problem is everything works in this motorhome and seems like the ones I look at all have some problems. I guess I will check out that web site Thanks Marty
