2000 sable still has check engine light after replacing spark plugs, wires,DPFE Sensor, & EGR Valve. I'm out of options. I've been to the Dealer TWICE. I've been charged both times and the car still has a check engine light and runs poorly. Gas mileage has suffered horribly! Please help!!!!

Check Engine Soon light
My light has been on for two years now (52,000km since it first lit-up) I have replaced the plugs, pcv valve, fuel filter, air filter and plug wires, too. When I took my '97 Sable in for a regular transmission fluid change/service, the guy there told me that the code that came up on the computer suggested it was a 'Camshaft' issue. That was back in July '04. The really weird thing is that in Dec. '03 I had a mechanic tell me that the computer code was a Transmission Code - '17', I think it was.
My car runs fine (knock on wood) and does not suffer from the poor mileage problem. So, I wonder if in my case I'd be chasing an electrical glitch if I investigated it further. Ay eight years old, my Sable has 195,000km on it now, so I'm not going to throw a lot of $ at it. It's almost time for an Escape! For your problem, I'd make the friendly suggestion that you make sure you don't have a caliper piston that is starting to sieze causing a brake to 'drag', since you've replaced other items - ones that I would have done first, too! You didn't mention replacing the fuel filter - that might help mileage as well if your's is aging and dirty. |

Re: 2000 sable still has check engine light after replacing plugs, wires, etc.
Sorry guys, I just don't get these replies. The first logical question would be, was the OBD read? If it was, what was the code number, and subsequently what kind of malfunction did that indicate? Rule 1(!): If the engine light is on, (continuous, not blinking) you've got an OBD message (malfunction) to be read. You need an OBD reader tool to read it. It can have more than one message at the same time. For instance after the initial code of "Insufficient EGR flow" you'll be likely to get also (a different code number) "Both banks too lean", the first malfunction will create the second. Anyway, it can be a multitude of things, and you can do tune-ups til doomsday, and it will not likely to be fixed, unless you just get lucky.
