True Duals on a Silverado ???

how can you put true duals on a silverado ??
there's the exhaust sensor in the cat convertor....
how do you get around that ?... and does it damage the motor in any way ?

and is it a big increase from just changing the muffler and tips ?

i'm new to the board, please let me know

Re: True Duals on a Silverado ???

Well first off there is no sensor IN the cat..... there is one before AND after on EACH side......4 o2 sensors in all. A true dual system is what i consider i have on mine..... Each side is seperate from the other....... one cat , one muffler on each side. I had my system installed by getting the muffler shop to cut the factory exhaust off just before the "Y" pipe where it is still 2 pipes and had them continue dual the rest of the way. They also installed a balancing tube or blending tube as it is sometimes called because I had an issue of power loss initially after system was installed and they thought that the tube might help, which it did not. Anyways , that is what i call a true dual system, each side is independent from the other, not just a single in , dual out muffler. Oh and by the way I did get the power back eventually, when the computer was able to make the necessary adjustments on it's own (disconnecting the battery did not help)

Re: True Duals on a Silverado ???

Was in the middle of typing my post when busta entered his. I was gonna add that it kinda depends on how a person would define "true duals". I had duals on my 88 full size jimmy, no crossover pipe, the same with my 96 sierra with the 5.7, man that thing went. 255/85/16's on it and when doing 35-40 kmh if i floored it , it would break them loose when it kicked down and then chirp them into second.

I'm running a dual setup, but opted to install an xpipe before the two headers to even out the exhaust flow. My long tubes had bungs in them for the front 02 sensors, and I had the rear 02 sensors removed from the computer. I also deleted the cats.

so im going to get a "dual" exhaust put on my 02 silverado next week........I have an original 40 series flowmaster (single in dual out) that im having them put on instead of the crappy v-force muffler that they offer....is this even going to be worth it?? I know its not "true Duals" but its all i can afford....is it worth it??

Thanks

I think you'll be happy with the sound and performance. Go for it.

Re: True Duals on a Silverado ???

Yea, mine is the same way...single in, dual out. I like it. I wasent really down on spending all that money to put in true duals, but i will say, my system sounds just as good as most trucks who do have "true" duals. My one friend crawled under my truck a few months ago...all I heard was.."You only have one muffler? damn!" I guess he was expecting something more impressive. I also got a nice bit od added hp. I have also cherped them while already doinr 20-30 mph. I was impressed. Im sure its not good for the tranny, but its fun.

duals

yeah, i was gonna copy the system on sshotrods.com.. with the dean lapole headers, xpipe, 40 series, and maybe some high flow cats... but now people are saying the single in, dual out is like the same performance....

i got a 4.8... incase i get indicators for the o2 sensors.... i cant find any simulators for the 4.8.. only the 5.3 and bigger...maybe they'll interchange ?

im not used to modding newer vehicles... i'm used to the old school stuff, with carbs, not tbi =]

please let me know the best option for sound & performance..

how about a tuner ? should i go with a programmer ? or send off my PCU

This is the best way I can explain my feelings on true dual setups. There is no doubt these trucks run better off of backpressure. A true dual setup will knock out some low end grunt but make it up in the upper power band. On a slightly modified/stock truck, I would not go with a true dual setup, because the low end loss would be extremely noticeable and probably wouldn't be made up enough in the higher range to compensate for the low end loss. An xpipe definately helps to smooth out exhaust flow. I went with the true dual setup because my setup is for mid/high range power band. My cam powerband is 1600-6600rpms and I have a 3000 stall converter, not to mention a 6.0L. The stall allowed me to let go of some of the bottem end, because at full throttle, my rpms never drop below 3200rpms.

So, bottom line, a single inlet dual outlet muffler with the cats will allow for enough backpressure to keep the low end grunt, so I would stick with that.

Some guys will argue that backpressure has nothing to do with anything on this truck. The best thing I can tell them is let me take you for a ride, both with my cutouts closed and cutouts open. With them open(they are right behind the headers), my truck really feels sluggish(compared to closed) until I reach the high end rpms. That is proof alone the backpressure is needed.

They don't flow a whole lot more than the stock manifolds. You won't see near the performance with shorties that you will with mid lenght or long tubes. Check out Summitracing. They offer some Doug Thorley long tubes for our trucks at aroun $430. Not much more and in some cases less than shorties. Good luck on your decisions.
